My ceramic work is inspired by nature, particularly the flora and fauna of the Sonoran desert.  All of my stoneware pieces are hand-built using slab, coil and pinch methods, and are finished with a combination of oxides, stains, glazes and underglazes.  I maintain a home studio in the foothills of Tucson, Arizona, where I have worked since 2004.

Rebecca Bish was born in Louisiana in 1958. She was raised in East Texas and, after graduating from the University of Texas at Tyler, lived in Austin, Dallas and New Orleans before settling in Tucson in 1995. She is a self-taught artist whose sculptural ceramic work has been exhibited regionally since 2004.

My sculptural ceramic work reflects an ongoing preoccupation with the nature of transience, particularly as it relates to beauty.  I am interested in the subtle, quiet, easily overlooked aspects of beauty that are revealed only through careful observation...through "noticing".  My aim is to draw the viewer in close, to invite a moment of pause and reflection and ultimately, to cultivate a deeper way of seeing.  As an artist, I am drawn to the idea that a moment, otherwise lost, might somehow be captured and expressed through image and form.  My creative process is fueled by the challenging pursuit of this goal, and yet I am constantly reminded of a frustrating paradox...it is the bittersweet awareness of transience that gives beauty (and life itself) such profound meaning.
